Systems of Your Body 2

Dear Friend,

Welcome back! For most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, school is back in session.

Whether you are a teacher, student, parent, or caregiver, change is officially upon you again. How does it feel? Is your glass half-empty or half-full?

How you answer this question may reflect your outlook on life, your attitude, and even your overall health.

Did you know that starting your day with a positive mental attitude can help boost your mood, help with stress management, and even improve your health? It’s true!

According to a blog published by the Mayo Clinic, researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits may include:

  • Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress and pain
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • Reduced risk of death from cancer, infections, and respiratory conditions
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress.

Mindfulness, movement, and starting our day with a PMA (positive mental attitude) are a few ways we can support the health and function of our systems.

Mindfulness Activity of the Week

Gratitude Journal

Start your day with a PMA! Spend a few minutes each day writing down three things you’re grateful for. They can be as simple as a good cup of coffee, successfully navigating a difficult conversation, or time spent with a good friend.

Movement Activity of the Week

Tree

Tree pose strengthens the legs and core while opening the hips and stretching the inner thigh and groin muscles. Tree pose begins with an integration of the body, mind, and breath that embodies the natural qualities of trees: grounding, balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, tolerance, strength, and grace.
