SEL & Systems of Your Body – The Nervous System – Week 1

Dear Friend,

Awake

This month, we’re exploring how Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is rooted in the brain and body working together. We will learn how the nervous system helps students notice, respond, regulate, connect, and recover.

What makes the nervous system special? A lot of things!

The nervous system is always gathering information from both inside and outside the body. When students begin to notice signals such as a racing heart, tense muscles, shallow breathing, or calm focus, they build awareness of their emotions, reactions, and needs.

Aware

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) helps the body respond to stress and return to balance. Students strengthen self-awareness when they recognize when their sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight, freeze) is activated and when their parasympathetic nervous system supports calm and regulation.

Align

Slow breathing, movement, mindfulness, rest, and connection help regulate the nervous system and support focus, resilience, and emotional balance. Aligning the brain and body helps students respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.

Activate

Let’s practice resetting our nervous system.

  1. Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly
  2. Take 3 slow breaths
  3. Notice: What am I feeling in my body right now?

Choose one internal strength to activate:

  • Awareness → Notice without judgment
  • Resilience → Reset and recover
  • Social Fluency → Ask for support
  • Agency → Make a thoughtful choice

Now affirm: “My brain and body are always communicating with me. When I pause to notice what I feel, I build awareness. When I learn how to reset and recover, I build resilience.”
