SEL & Systems of Your Body – The Immune System
Awake
Last week, we explored how the musculoskeletal system supports movement, posture, confidence, and resilience. This week, we turn our attention to the immune system—the body’s defense and recovery system. The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that protects us from illness while supporting healing, recovery, and overall well-being. What many students don’t realize is that their thoughts, emotions, sleep, movement, breathing, and relationships all influence how effectively their immune system functions.
Aware
The immune system responds to more than germs. It is constantly influenced by the choices we make and the experiences we have each day. When stress levels rise, the nervous and endocrine systems release hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline to help the body respond. While these hormones are helpful in the short term, chronic stress can keep the body in a heightened state of alertness, making it more difficult for the immune system to function optimally. Developing self-awareness helps students recognize how stress, fatigue, emotions, and daily habits impact both their physical and emotional well-being.
Align
The immune, nervous, and endocrine systems work together to create balance throughout the body. The vagus nerve serves as an important communication pathway between the brain and many of our organs, helping shift the body from stress and protection into rest, recovery, and healing. Healthy habits such as quality sleep, mindful breathing, movement, nutrition, reflection, and positive social connection help strengthen emotional regulation while supporting immune health. By aligning daily choices with well-being, students develop the internal strengths needed to thrive in school, relationships, and life.
Activate
Let’s activate with an Immune System Reflection practice:
Invite students to pause and reflect:
- Take three slow, steady breaths
- Place one hand on the heart and one hand on the belly
Ask yourself:
- How does my body feel when I am stressed or overwhelmed?
- What situations create the most stress in my life right now?
- What are three habits that help me feel energized, balanced, and healthy?
Journal Prompt:
“If my immune system reflects the care I give my body, mind, and relationships, what is one choice I can make today to support the healthiest version of myself?”
Now Affirm:
“My daily choices matter. When I care for my body, regulate my emotions, and nurture positive relationships, I strengthen my ability to learn, grow, heal, and thrive.”
