SEL & Systems of Your Body – The Endocrine System
Awake
This week, we’re exploring the endocrine system and its role in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The endocrine system works closely with the nervous system, using hormones to help regulate mood, energy, stress, growth, motivation, sleep, and connection.
Through developing internal strengths, students build greater awareness, resilience, and emotional balance throughout the day.
Aware
Hormones travel through the bloodstream carrying important messages throughout the body. Stress, sleep, movement, nutrition, breathing, relationships, and thought patterns all influence hormone balance. When students begin to notice how their bodies feel, they strengthen their awareness of how emotions and experiences impact learning and behavior.
The endocrine and nervous systems work together to maintain balance, or homeostasis. Hormones like cortisol help the body respond to stress, while dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin support motivation, emotional balance, connection, and belonging.
Students build self-awareness when they recognize how their habits, environment, and relationships influence how they feel and function.
Align
Healthy routines help regulate both the endocrine and nervous systems.
Sleep, mindful movement, breathing practices, hydration, reflection, and positive social connection support focus, resilience, and emotional regulation.
Curiosity, resourcefulness, and integrity help students reflect on patterns, make adjustments, and align their actions with their values and well-being.
Activate
Try practicing with a Mind-Body Reset to start the school day.
Invite students to begin the day with a short grounding practice:
- Sit comfortably and take 3 slow breaths
- Stretch your arms overhead or practice a gentle sun salutation
- Place one hand on your heart and notice how the body feels
Repeat together:
“Today I choose curiosity, calm, and confidence.
My thoughts, choices, and actions support my well-being.
I am capable, connected, and ready to learn.”
Now affirm:
“My body is always communicating with me. Healthy habits, mindful choices, and positive connections help me create balance, resilience, and well-being.”
