SEL & Systems of Your Body – The Cardiovascular System
Awake
Last week, we explored how the endocrine system influences mood, stress, energy, and emotional balance through hormones. This week, we continue the conversation by focusing on the cardiovascular system—the body’s transportation network that delivers oxygen, nutrients, and energy throughout the body while supporting regulation, focus, resilience, and recovery.
The cardiovascular system includes the heart, blood, and blood vessels working together to keep the body energized and functioning efficiently. The heart is constantly communicating with the brain and nervous system, influencing emotional regulation, attention, stress response, and overall well-being. When students notice changes such as a racing heart, tense muscles, or shifts in energy, they strengthen their awareness of how emotions and stress affect learning and behavior.
Aware
Stress directly impacts the cardiovascular system. During moments of challenge or overwhelm, heart rate increases, muscles tighten, and the sympathetic nervous system activates. Through self-awareness and emotional regulation practices, students learn to recognize these signals and shift from automatic reactions to thoughtful responses.
Slow breathing, positive self-talk, mindful movement, and reflection help restore calm and support clearer thinking and concentration.
Align
Healthy cardiovascular habits strengthen both physical and emotional resilience. Movement increases circulation, oxygen flow, mood regulation, and energy while supporting focus and learning readiness. Practices such as stretching, walking, mindful breathing, hydration, and movement breaks help students regulate emotions, reset attention, and create balance throughout the school day.
Activate
Engage your students in a Heart & Breath Classroom Reset.
Invite students to pause for one minute:
- Place one hand over the heart
- Take 3 slow breaths together
- Notice:
- Is my heart beating fast or slow?
- Does my body feel tense or calm?
- What helps me feel focused and energized?
Next, complete 2-3 minutes of mindful movement:
- Angel Wings
- Palm Tree
- Cow
- Cat
- Seated Twist

Close together:
“My heart, brain, and body work together to help me learn, grow, and connect. When I slow down, breathe, and move mindfully, I create calm, focus, and balance.”
Now affirm:
“I can notice my body’s signals and respond with awareness. My breath, movement, and mindset help me build resilience, focus, and emotional balance.”
