Life Skills that Last – Exploring Resilience & Resourcefulness
Awake
Life doesn’t always go as planned. Summer can bring its own transitions, uncertainties, and opportunities to practice the skills that help us navigate change. Resilience and resourcefulness work together to help us recover from challenges, recognize our strengths, and find a way forward.
Resilience isn’t about avoiding difficulty or always getting it right. It is our ability to adapt, recover, and continue moving forward when things become challenging. Every experience gives the brain an opportunity to learn and adapt. When we meet challenges with awareness, flexibility, and persistence, we strengthen our capacity to navigate what comes next.
Aware
Resourcefulness begins with a pause and a question: What do I already have that can help me? Our resources include our knowledge, skills, experiences, relationships, creativity, curiosity, breath, movement, and willingness to ask for help. Instead of focusing only on what is missing, resourcefulness helps us notice possibilities and recognize that we often have more tools available than we realize.
Align
Resilience helps us recover; resourcefulness helps us respond. Together, they allow us to approach challenges with greater confidence and flexibility. When something doesn’t go as planned, we can pause, identify what is within our control, draw on our strengths and resources, and choose one meaningful next step. This practice shifts us from “I can’t” toward “What can I try?”
Activate
The Resourceful Reset
The next time you or your students encounter a challenge, pause and ask:
- What is happening right now?
- What is within my control?
- What strength or resource do I already have?
- Who or what could support me?
- What is one action I can take next?
Take one slow breath before choosing your next step.
Summer Practice:
Notice one challenge this week and practice finding three possible resources that could help you move through it.
Now Affirm
“I have resources within me and around me. I can pause, adapt, ask for help, and find a way forward. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger and more resourceful.”
