Get Back in the Zone – Flow State
Dear Friend,
Awake
Flow State, a state of intense concentration and enjoyment, can be experienced in various aspects of life when we become aware of it. It’s fascinating how we can lose track of time and space when we’re fully immersed in a state of flow, often only realizing it once we emerge from it and reflect on the experience. Activities such as play, dance, meditation, yoga, projects, and work that we enjoy can induce this state, where we become completely absorbed and focused.
Aware
Aware of the flow state, we may wonder what happened during an intense experience or how hours can pass by when we’re engrossed in a project. This is the essence of flow state. Hebb’s Law, which states that “where the mind goes, energy flows,” affirms that our attention shapes our energy expenditure. Additionally, neurons that fire together wire together, suggesting that consistent practice enhances our skills and facilitates quicker re-entry into the flow state.
Align
Aligning with the flow state involves a shift in brain activity. When we’re in a flow state, our brain waves transition from high-functioning beta waves to slower alpha and theta waves. This deeper state of consciousness allows us to immerse ourselves in an activity, fostering creativity and deep concentration. In alpha brain waves, our minds are calm and receptive to ideas, while theta waves enable us to enter a state of visionary thinking and dream-like thinking. Dopamine and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters that play a crucial role in this state, contribute to the sense of reward and focus that keeps us engaged.
Activate
Supporting ourselves by eliminating distractions and intensifying our concentration are two crucial components in maintaining focus and effortlessly returning to it. Mirror neurons and mental rehearsal are practices that also support a state of energized focus. For instance, observing someone else performing a task and then replicating it after a few attempts demonstrates this concept. The elements we bring into our field, surround ourselves with, and allocate our energy to are key considerations for cultivating focus. Mentally rehearsing what we aim to develop, create, or build is an excellent way to support our minds. By mentally preparing ourselves, we can anticipate and experience success. These practices can set us up for success.
