Neurotransmitters 3: Serotonin

Dear Friend,

Last week, we suggested taking inventory of the “feel-good” hormone dopamine, which can feel like a wild rush.

This week, we’re paying attention to serotonin, which promotes feelings of joy and well-being.

Serotonin is a mood stabilizer, mostly produced in the gut. So, as the saying goes, “You are what you eat.” In this case, eating more serotonin-friendly foods can actually lead to more joy.

Mindfulness Activity of the Week

Eat to Feel Better

The first step in producing more serotonin is having enough of the amino acid tryptophan. Since tryptophan cannot be made in the body, it must be obtained from the diet.

Make a list of what you ate in the last 24 hours. Circle serotonin-friendly foods in both categories below.

Good Sources of Tryptophan Include:

  • Eggs
  • Poultry
  • Salmon
  • Milk
  • Spinach
  • Cheese
