You and Your Brain 8: Brain Waves Explained

Dear Friend,

Summertime is here! Find out how fun in the sun actually helps students develop two key components of learning: curiosity and open-mindedness.

The slower pace of summer allows students to move from the beta state of mind (stress and worry) to the relaxed, reflective state of alpha.

While students in the Northern Hemisphere are making waves in the pool or on the beach, it’s an opportunity to experience brain waves that impact their well-being and state of mind.

Micro-Moments of Meditation

Summer provides ample opportunities for micro-moments of meditation. Anytime you notice the beauty of a pink-filled sky at the end of the day or the way the morning light hits the tops of the trees at sunrise, your brain shifts into an alpha state.

How often do you put your phone down and allow your mind to wander?

  • The alpha state nourishes your mind (reflective, positive yet passive, with increased concentration and less distraction).
  • Name the times of day and activities when your mind is slowed down and distractions are eliminated.
  • Which practices would help you induce this state?
